Peschiera del Garda
Peschiera is located in one of the most strategic and panoramic sites of the lake, at the point where today meet the most important ways of communication and the starting point of the river Mincio, and where there was a prehistoric village of stilt houses. It is the ancient Arilica of Roman rule, as described by Pliny the Elder. Have been built castles by the Byzantines, the Lombards, the Scala family, Charlemagne, Berengar. In the twelfth century it gained autonomy, but as a free city was not able to defend themselves from the siege of Frederick Barbarossa. In the following centuries it passed to the Visconti, to Venice and it met the Austrian and Napoleonic rule.
With the unification of Italy, to Peschiera also ended the agonizing period of conflict and political and economic strife. Peschiera is now one of the most famous tourist locations of the lake, and offers many hotel facilities, tourist attractions and sports and numerous amusement parks. The old town retains much of the mighty fortification walls, built between 1553 and 1556 to a design by Guidobaldo Della Rovere.
The local cuisine offers a great variety of recipes, wines and extra virgin olive oil, fish dish specialty like carp, whitefish, lake trout, eel, sardines, pike, chub, tench, carp and perch. Furthermore you can taste the exceptional wines DOC like Chardonnay for the whites and Nosiola, Mueller Thurgau, Pinot Bianco and Bianco di Custoza, and for the red wines Rosso Superiore, Groppello, Novello and Ruby. Finally, sparkling wines, such as sparkling Rosé, Lugana Spumante and Bardolino Chiaretto Spumante. And finally, the traditional Grappa, with numerous aromatic variants.
